Usually the starting point for finding help with a child or young person's mental or emotional distress is the local GP who will refer on to specialist help if thought appropriate. Some GPs have counsellors attached to the practice who will see older children or teenagers to talk through things that are worrying them. Alternatively, children can be referred by their parents, the health visitor or school to Child Psychology or Psychiatry services via their local Community Mental Health Resource Centre.
