Time to Change Wales Action Fortnight: May 21 – June 1
Your chance to be a part of Time to Change Wales and make a difference in your community.
The last fortnight in May is Time to Change Wales Action Fortnight, the first opportunity for you or your organisation to host a Time to Change Wales event to challenge mental health stigma in your community. Read on to find out how to get involved.
What is Time to Change Wales?
Time to Change Wales is the first national campaign to end the stigma and discrimination experienced by people with mental health problems in Wales.
What is the Time to Change Wales Action Fortnight?
The Time to Change Wales Action Fortnight is a series of events run by charities, community groups and people with experience of mental health problems around Wales.
These events will run from the 21st of May until the 1st of June.
Event organisers aim to spread the Time to Change Wales message of ending ental health stigma and discrimination in their own communities using materials such as leaflets, pens and posters supplied in a Time to Change Wales event box – and a bit of imagination.
If you become an event organiser, you will be given support and advice on everything from attracting media attention to helping your event achieve a lasting legacy.
What kind of events are these?
The events could involve hosting an anti-stigma information stand or workshop at a busy community centre, shop or café, or you could try something a bit more adventurous. How about a myth busting quiz, a storytelling event at your local library, an anti-stigma picnic, a mental health flashmob, or even a haircut or manicure from a professional hairdresser or beauty therapist with a mental health problem? Be as simple or creative as you like, just think about the best ways to challenge stigma and discrimination in your community.
There are a few things to consider. The events need to engage the public, so they need to take place in a public area such as a café, a park or a shop (with permission from the relevant people, of course). They also have to challenge stigma in some way, such as getting people to talk about mental health, busting myths and stereotypes or bringing people with and without mental health problems together.
Full terms and conditions will be made available to anyone taking part.
How do I get to run an event?
Anyone who wants to challenge mental health stigma and discrimination can run their own event using the information and marketing materials in our campaign box. The box will soon be available to order from the Time to Change Wales website.
To register your interest and receive further information about the campaign box, email info@timetochangewales.org.uk or call us on 02920346583. It would be great to hear your ideas and we might even be able to put you in touch with other event organisers in your area.
