&amp;nbsp;
First aid is the help given to an injured person before appropriate treatment
can be obtained. The aims of any first aid are to:
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;preserve life;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;prevent deterioration of any injury or illness;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;promote healing;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;provide comfort to the ill or injured.
&amp;nbsp;
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the immediate help given to someone
experiencing a mental distress. The aims of MHFA are:
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;to preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;to provide help to prevent the mental distress developing into a more serious state;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;to promote the recovery of good mental health;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;to provide comfort to a person experiencing mental distress.
&amp;nbsp;
MFHA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people:
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; how to recognise the symptoms of mental distress
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; how to provide initial help
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; how to guide a person towards appropriate help
&amp;nbsp;
Mind Cymru, on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government, is aiming to train 75 MHFA Instructors, who will be trained by a team of four National Trainers. A team of three Regional Co-ordinators (covering North, Mid and South Wales) will support the Instructors in finding applicants to attend the two-day Mental Health First Aid&amp;nbsp; course.

&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;to promote the recovery of good mental health;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;to provide comfort to a person experiencing mental distress.
&amp;nbsp;
MFHA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people:
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; how to recognise the symptoms of mental distress
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; how to provide initial help
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; how to guide a person towards appropriate help
&amp;nbsp;
Mind Cymru, on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government, is aiming to train 75 MHFA Instructors, who will be trained by a team of four National Trainers. A team of three Regional Co-ordinators (covering North, Mid and South Wales) will support the Instructors in finding applicants to attend the two-day Mental Health First Aid course. Our initial target is to have over 2,000 people in Wales attending this two-day course by March 2009. We already have interest shown by the police and probation services, for example, in either sending staff to train as Instructors at Llandrindod, or to attend the 2-day training courses when these are up and running.
For further information, please contact Kim Pugh, MHFA Project Manager, on 02920 346581, k.pugh@mind.org.uk
or Claire Foster, Regional Co-ordinator (South) on 01495 757393, c.foster@mind.org.uk
or Gwynfryn Evans, Regional Co-ordinator (North) on 07802 173148, g.evans@mind.org.uk

        <title>Anyone For Advocacy Fri, 10 Oct</title>
        <description>

World Mental Health Day 10th October 2008
At Hafod Hendre (Royal Welsh Showground) 10 am to 4 pm
&amp;nbsp;An event to launch the Powys Advocacy Network
&amp;nbsp;Define: What is Advocacy? What do the words mean?
Highlight the range of advocacy services in Powys.
Present and get feedback on the Draft Advocacy Charter.
Participate in planning for the future.
For further details and to book a place (numbers strictly limited) contact Glynis Luke on 01686 628 300 or glynis.luke@pavo.org.uk
&amp;nbsp;Members of the newly formed Powys Advocacy Network would like to invite you to this exciting step forward in Advocacy provision for Powys. The network will be the principle speakers at this event and it will be an opportunity to find out what they do, what the different types of advocacy mean, and how the Network plans to develop their joint approach to advocacy.
This is a not to miss event for people who are involved in the delivery of services in either the statutory or voluntary sector. It will also be relevant to people who feel their voice has not been heard and who may wish to use advocacy services. People who may want to train as an advocate or who may have been called upon to be an advocate for a relative or friend will find this event of particular value.
We would emphasise that this is not a specific &amp;lsquo;mental health&amp;rsquo; event as advocacy services within the Network also include advocates for people with learning or physical disabilities, advocates for children and families, and advocates for carers.

Exploring the potential and challenges for service-user run services
Date: Wednesday 25 March 2009 Venue: ORT House Conference, London NW1
Today, there are a small, but increasing, number of service user-run services across the country. However, if service user-run services are to be a significant component of service landscapes in the future, there are a number of key challenges to be faced. This conference aims to explore the enormous possibilities offered by service user-run mental health services. A range of innovative and exciting service user-run services will be showcased - ranging from crisis services, to self-help groups. Key issues involved in commissioning and operating such services will be explored. What are the key benefits attached to these kinds of services, and what are the major challenges they are likely to face? How can the transition from staff-run to service user-run services be managed efficiently? What kind of training and support will individuals running such services require?
Aims of the conferenceAt the end of the day, participants will have:

    a greater appreciation of the wide range of service user-run services in existence in the UK and the enormous possibilities offered by them
    an improved understanding of the range of contexts in which development of service user-run services can take place
    a better understanding of the challenges involved in running such services and effective strategies for dealing with them
    a greater confidence to commission, develop or run service user-run services.

        <title>Fear: Mental Health Action Week 2009 Sun, 12 Apr</title>
        <description>

This year the Mental Health Foundation is launching a national campaign to raise awareness about the impact fear and anxiety can have on our lives.
Fear and anxiety are part of the mind and body\\\'s natural response to threats or thoughts that something bad might happen. Usually they last for a short time and then pass. But sometimes they last longer and you can get stuck with them.
They can take over your life, affecting your ability to:
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; eat
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; sleep
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; concentrate
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; travel
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; enjoy life
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; leave the house
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; go to work or school.
It can be hard to break the cycle, but there are lots of ways to do it. We want to tell as many people as possible that help is available and that you don\\\'t need to suffer in silence.

&amp;nbsp;
The Mental Health Accommodation Network is aimed at all people involved with using, providing, planning, developing and commissioning accommodation for people with mental health problems.
A key focus of the Network is on delivery of the Standards for housing and supported accommodation set out in the National Service Frameworks for Adults with Mental Health Problems. Recent research by Wales Audit Office has shown that together we are not achieving these standards.
&amp;nbsp;
Our next conference on 7th January 2010 is on the importance of improving service provision through an integrated approach to mental health, housing and homelessness in Wales in order to promote recovery and improve the quality of life of vulnerable people. The conference will profile the work of a number of agencies who aim to exemplify this in practice.
&amp;nbsp;
These will include:
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Joy Kent as Chair of the conference: Director of Cymorth Cymru, which aims to represent and promote good practice development.
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Ralph Lillywhite: St. Mungos, which has led the development of a service user centred outcome assessment tool to help in promoting independence and recovery.
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Julie Denley: Cwm Taf Health Board. Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT) is not a new concept, but there has been limited focus nationally on their role in helping people to maintain their own homes when working in partnership with housing providers.

The Mental Health Accommodation Network is organised by the Wales Centre for Mental Health Service Development (NLIAH) and sponsored by the Housing Strategy and Services Unit, Welsh Assembly Government

The second in&amp;nbsp;a series of talks arranged by the newly-formed Friends of Brecon &amp;amp; District Contact Association takes place on Thursday 8th April at 7pm in Brecon\\\\\\\'s George Hotel. The Friends has been formed to extend and support the work of the Association and to help raise awareness of mental health issues in and around Brecon, Crickhowell, Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye. It is open to everyone and aims to be a sociable group holding talks, activities and fund-raising events. The first talk in March, by psychologist Chris Arnall, was very well attended.
Visual artist Susan J Adams, who lives and works near Brecon, will give an illustrated talk entitled They Leak Through Me: A Visual Exploration of the Hearing of Voices. &amp;quot;Largely because of the stigma and taboo associated with unusual mind experiences and mental health issues today we seldom have a chance to consider the visionary and creative potential in the phenomenon of voice-hearing,&amp;quot; explains Susan. &amp;quot;My intention is to promote interest and discussion about hearing voices as something much more than a &amp;quot;pathological&amp;quot; experience&amp;quot;.
