Age Cymru Powys – Bereavement Service

One Year In

By Karen Greenough

I recently met with Amy from Age Cymru Powys to chat about a new bereavement support service for older adults, and it’s clear just how valuable this support already is.

The service, delivered by Age Cymru Dyfed and Age Cymru Powys, has been funded by the Welsh Government’s National Bereavement Support Grant 2025. It’s designed as an early intervention service, helping people aged 70 and over access support more easily—especially in rural areas where services can be harder to reach.

In Wales, more than a quarter of bereavement support needs among older adults go unmet (office for national statistics) . That can leave people feeling isolated and unsure where to turn. This project aims to change that by offering early, compassionate support and making the next steps feel a little clearer and less overwhelming.

The service has actually been running for nearly a year and is free to anyone over 70 who is bereaved. As Amy explained, bereavement doesn’t just mean losing a partner, she’s supported people who’ve lost parents later in life too (& yes they still meet the age criteria!)

A big part of the support is practical help, especially in those first few weeks and months. Amy often helps with paperwork, navigating processes, or even helping someone to apply for financial support towards funeral costs. In some cases, she’s helped people deal with more complicated situations, like when someone passes away without a will.

She also spoke about how deeply life can change after losing a partner of many years. Often, one person has managed things like finances or bills, and it can be incredibly difficult for the other to know where to start. That’s where this service really steps in.

Interestingly, not everyone reaches out straight away. Some people get in touch a few months later, after the funeral, when the children have gone back home and things seem “back to normal.” That’s often when the reality of the loss really hits.

The service is available across Powys, with support offered by phone, online, or in person. Amy will even come out to visit people, making it as accessible and personal as possible.

And if someone doesn’t meet the criteria, they won’t be left without help—the team will always guide them towards other services that can support them.

While it’s not a counselling service, the team has received training from Cruse Bereavement Support and brings real empathy and strong listening skills to every conversation. As Amy shared, there’s no right or wrong way to grieve—everyone’s experience is different.

Having met Amy, I can honestly say that anyone reaching out will be met with warmth, kindness, and support that’s tailored to their needs. It’s a simple idea, but one that’s making a real difference.
