The Advocacy “Big Event” – Advocacy and Adult Safeguarding

21 November 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Following the success of The Advocacy “Big Event” for the last 3 years, The HOPE Advocacy Project are excited to welcome The Welsh Adult Advocacy Sector to this event for the fourth year running.

The third session of a series of four sessions- we will be exploring advocacy and adult safeguarding in conjunction with National Adult Safeguarding week .

The HOPE Project are excited to welcome Professor Suzy Braye, who will be discussing with her significant expertise the issue of “self-neglect” and advocating for people who are self-neglecting and Rebecca Zerk and Sarah Wydall from Dewis Choice will be exploring the matter of “Safeguarding and Lacking Capacity”

Suzy will be exploring that working with people who are living in self-neglect brings many challenges.

  • How can we understand what leads someone to neglect their hygiene, health or surroundings in such extreme ways?
  • How can we best respond to their apparent reluctance to accept support?
  • How can we best seek their trust and begin to make a difference?
  • How does witnessing their distress affect us and what support do we ourselves need?
  • There is now significant evidence on what goes wrong and what goes right in self-neglect work.
  • This presentation draws on that evidence to demonstrate how positive outcomes can be achieved even in the most extreme circumstances.

During this event there will be fantastic opportunities for advocates to connect with other advocates from across Wales to explore, discuss and share practice.
