Men’s Hub Llanddewi:
Rebuilding Connection Through Community
by Karen Greenough
A new community initiative in Llanddewi is helping men come together to share experiences, learn new skills, and build meaningful connections in a welcoming and supportive environment.
The Walsh Connection, a not-for-profit community group based in Radnorshire, was established with a simple but powerful vision: to bring people together and positively impact lives and the local environment through creativity, social interaction, and shared learning.
Their latest project, Men’s Hub Llanddewi, is already proving to be a valuable addition to the local community.
The group, which launched on 8th April, meets on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month at The Walsh in Llanddewi. The sessions provide a relaxed space where men can meet, chat, learn new skills, and support one another over a cup of tea and something tasty to eat.
I visited the group on Wednesday 27th May and was warmly welcomed by Bethan Armstrong, the driving force behind the initiative. Tea was quickly offered, and conversation flowed naturally from the moment I arrived.
One attendee reflected on how The Walsh, once a local pub, now fulfils a similar social role for many men. He spoke about a time when men would regularly gather in pubs after work or during retirement to discuss life, family, work, sport, and, often without realising it, their wellbeing. As many traditional community spaces have changed or disappeared, he felt the Men’s Hub has stepped in to fill an important gap.
Although only in its second month, attendance has been impressive, with many participants returning week after week. Some members provide lifts to others who are unable to drive, and friendships have formed.
The atmosphere is informal and welcoming. The space is set up to allow people to gather in smaller groups if they prefer, while activities such as a community jigsaw, a small lending library, and even table tennis on a sightly wonky table (which I am informed adds to the fun!) help create opportunities for conversation and connection.
Activities vary from session to session. Members have enjoyed woodwork projects, whittling, and making pizzas in the outdoor pizza oven. On the day of my visit, one participant had brought along his collection of vintage cameras, sparking plenty of discussion and shared interest. Future plans include gardening projects and other hands-on activities that encourage learning and participation.
The Walsh Connection’s wider mission is to create funded community events that foster wellbeing, celebrate creativity, encourage skill-sharing, and strengthen community cohesion. Their work places people at the centre of everything they do, ensuring that everyone who participates feels valued, supported, and able to grow.
The group also welcomes people who would like to share a skill, hobby, or activity with members. Whether it’s upcycling, crafts, gardening, or another interest, there are opportunities to contribute and inspire others.
