Spotlight on South Powys Mind

A Visit to South Powys Mind: Expanding Support Across the Community

I recently had the opportunity to meet with Alison Curzon, Events Coordinator at what was, at the time, Brecon Mind. By the time you’re reading this, the organisation will have completed an exciting transition and become South Powys Mind, reflecting its expanded reach across the whole of South Powys, including Ystradgynlais.

Located just behind Morrisons in Brecon, the centre is a welcoming space with a large communal area and smaller rooms for activities and support. During my visit, an “Art in Mind” session was underway, with participants fully engaged in a calm, creative environment.

Expanding Reach, Meeting Local Needs

Ali spoke to me about the challenges of funding and the organisation’s plans to expand beyond Brecon. With transport a common issue across the county, taking services out into the surrounding the communities remains a key priority.

Work is ongoing to better understand local needs across South Powys, including in Ystradgynlais.

A Wide Range of Support

At the Wellbeing Centre, individuals can access support in a variety of ways. A key offer is the daily drop-in, open Monday to Friday from 1-4pm. These sessions provide a relaxed, welcoming space for peer-led support, there is always a cuppa available and a friendly face to talk to, with no appointment needed

Across South Powys Mind, a diverse programme of groups runs throughout the week—both at the centre and in surrounding communities. These include everything from mums’ groups and gardening to pottery, art, writing, and music—something for everyone, regardless of interest or experience.

One particularly valuable service is their counselling service and including their low-cost counselling. Delivered by  trained counsellors gaining practical experience in a supervised environment, this privides a safe and confidential space to talk. Notably, there is currently no waiting list, making it an ideal time for anyone who has been considering reaching out for support.

The organisation also runs its popular Green Minds programme, which focuses on building connections with nature as a way to support both environmental sustainability and emotional wellbeing.

Additional services include:

Real People, Real Impact

At one point in our conversation, Alison was called away to support a service user who had dropped in and urgently needed someone to talk to. It was a powerful reminder of just how vital these services are and how responsive the team must be.

This gave me the opportunity to  chat with Abi, a volunteer at the centre. She shared how much she enjoys her role and how rewarding it is to be part of such a supportive environment.

I also briefly spoke with a regular service user, who talked honestly about how much she values the drop-in sessions. Having a place to go when needed makes a real difference, even if, as she noted with a smile, it can sometimes be a little lively.

A Growing Service Making a Difference

Leaving the centre, I was struck by the sheer volume of work involved in running a service like this. Covering a large and often rural area presents undeniable challenges, but it’s clear that South Powys Mind is making meaningful progress in reaching more people and adapting to community needs.

Their commitment to accessibility and inclusivity shines through and as they continue to grow, so too will their impact across South Powys
